General Board / Re: About CDP programs and GUI(s)

Hello!

It seems you are right. I've now tried with a different audio souce (laughing voice), and was able to proceed.
The problem I've mentioned above still happens when using bell sound from one of tutorials, though.

Perhaps it should be added to documentation that these processes rely on determination of pitch.

Thank you for details, and thank you for additional information.

Best wishes,
Vasilakis

Hello,

Thank you for reply, I've managed to found the process of "Shift" now, and thanks for mentioning that it has additional functions.

At first I've tried just the "shift frequences" process and it was easy to use, however when I switched to "shift/respace with formants" and tried to do a preview after small adjustments, I've got this error:

INFO: Extracting pitch contour.
ERROR: CANNOT ACHIEVE TASK:
ERROR: No valid pitch found.
ERROR: INVALID DATA
ERROR: Can't open file ~X_0.ana to read data.

I need to say that I've replaced the executable file for SoundShaper, so it's version 6.3 again. Did I miss some steps perhaps? Of course, I've did "analyse" conversion before doing "Shift" process.

Sorry to "bump" this, but is there anything I could try?

Also that alternative .exe for an old version that was mention on Mr. Wishart's website isn't available anymore (gave me 404 response).

While I'm feeling comfortable with SoundShaper and SoundThread, I hope to try SoundLoom, too, at some point in the future.

Thanks, and best wishes!

General Board / About CDP programs and GUI(s)

Hi,

I don't know if there was already a thread about it, but I wanted to ask... Is "SPECFNU" presented only as CMD command, or it's also in SoundShaper as well (I looked in Formants submenu, but didn't find such)? Same question for "STRANGE" functions.

Why I am asking about those, it's that I was trying to see which functions in CDP can do frequency shifting effects, and I've seen those mentioned above in documentation.

One thing I liked in the recently released SoundThread GUI, you can open up a "search" and start inputting names of programs. Is it also possible in other GUIs? Just curious.

By the way, "process table" button in SoundShaper works for me in all menus except "data" (just mentioning in case you've missed this).

Thanks, and have a nice day!

Hello again,

Glad to hear that the situation became clear.

Meanwhile, do I understand it right that it would be enough to replace .exe to make downgrade from 6.4 to 6.3?

Thanks

Hello,

I've downloaded and tried the patch scene you've prepared for me. It works perfectly, both with original "eight" voice source, and after replacing the sound.

That being said, my own save patch scene still has the abeforementioned problems, I mean, deletion of "~X_4" and "~X_11" folders do not have any impact (which, I guess, makes sense, as you say those were used for temporary files during previews). The only difference is that now SoundShaper doesn't talk about "previous patch files may not all be cleared" anymore, but all the other erros and behaviour remains the same (including "no .prm" warning etc.).

In case you would like to investigate my saved patch files if perhaps that way might give additional ideas to the problem, here it is: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Fyesv9fftR6hJTS7RTYgzfB2PlJELoX6/view?usp=sharing

From a quick glance, I have an impression that it looks a bit different to yours in the folder's and bat's contents.

EDIT:

While browsing PATCHES folder, I've noticed a text file listing various TUTORIAL patches. I've got interested and downloaded them from website. Interestingly, when I open them, behaviour is similar to my own "broken" patch, as in source file plays but further steps do now work, with more or less similar warning messages.

From what I understand, those tutorial patches were made in 2012-2013, though, intended for an older version of software. Meanwhile my patch was just done a couple of days ago, and of course I use SoundShaper 6.4 version.

That being said, I would like to suggest you update those tutorial patches for the current version of software (as perhaps there are other incompatibility problems with them), if possible - but, of course, after the solution to current situation will be reached.

Hello, thank you for investigating into my case.

I can't try out things at the moment, but I've checked what you mentioned and, well, it looks like there are indeed some weird folders in TMP named "~X_4" and "~X_11". There are also various .bat files like getenv and mixmany.

Hello,

Thanks for looking into my problem.

So it was a simple patch where I had one sound source and then Reverb, Speed, FltVari, Speed cells.
It was saved with "include source(s)" and "whole patch" options (I think both are enabled by default).

Then, what happens when I try to load it.

I press "load" button, choose the patch (with .ssp extension), then I get warning window telling me "previous patch files may not all be cleared..." (which suprises me as I try to load patch right after starting Soundshaper, before doing anything else), I press "ok", then it says "Missing source for cell A_0 Load original if possible", I press "yes". Then, if I click at A0 and press "play", the original file plays fine ("snd1.wav" and with correct folder path). If I try clicking on process cells, playback options are greyed out.

Then I press "Run" button. Something happens. On the bottom of the page, it says "Infile length not available. File may not exist". Then, if I click any cells, it says "file does not exist". If I click on A0 and press "play", it still plays fine. If I try "play" on any cells, then error window appears with same note (file does not exist).

Report window, of opened, still shows unreadable symbols ("~A_4.bat"

Now, if I do double-click on any of the processes, as you suggest above. Let's try with Reverb. Firstly, it greets me with message "parameter file does not exist". Then it loads parameters page and another warning message ('''' is not a valid integer value). I press "ok", then click "render" and then it says "Expected output file was not found". After which, report window changes content to the following:

rgain    : set level of dense reverb (0.0 <= rgain <= 1.0)
mix      : dry/wet balance (source and reverb): 1.0<-- mix -->= 0.0
rvbtime  : reverb decay time (to -60dB) in seconds
absorb  : degree of hf damping to suggest air absorption: 0.0 <= absorb <= 1.0
lpfreq  : lowpass filter cutoff freq (Hz) applied at input to reverb
to disable either filter (absorb, lpfreq), use the value 0
trtime  : trailer time added to outfile for reverb tail (secs)
times.txt: list of delay times (msecs) for 6 comb and 4 allpass filters

Then, if I click "run" again it says "multi processing finished", but nothing actually changes as I still get "file does not exist" messages etc.

Now, if I try double-clicking Speed instead, it firstly talks about lack of .prm, and then says "Cell's input file does not exist. Cannot re-edit cell".

So that's what happens to me. Now, if I restart Soundshaper and load patch again, and say "NO" when asked, and then manually choose snd1.wav. Soundfile loads fine in A0 again, and then software asks me to press "run". However, after that it's all just the same behaviour.

So, long story short, this was my first experience trying to save and load patch, and it ended up not working as I hoped :) Maybe I did some error when saving? Maybe there are other reasons for this behaviour? Still, I hoped that it would be a straightforward process, where you could work on your cell sequence and save it, and then load it the next day, use same or different source and the process sequence would be applied without problems and overall it would feel like opening the saved project to continue working on it.

One more detail I've now noticed, though. When opening parameters for reverb, I notice that Delaytimes datafile is in orange, and if you click on it, the text preview is empty (and there is no filepath displayed under "delaytimes data"). Meanwhile earlyref datafile is just black and if you click, it previews values just fine (and filepath displayed under "earlyref data"). Could this be important?

On a side note, I'm under impression that I've rewritten some of default .brk files for some of processes (for filters, for example), should I just copy the whole txt folder from installation files to restore those?

Thanks, and I hoped I described details now, anything else needed?

This looks very promising, thank you!

Hello,

For some reason, if I do changes to breakpoint values and save it and then do preview, it might not register the changes. So I had to re-open breakpoint file and only then do preview and get hearable results.

Is that expected behaviour? Thanks.

Hi!

So I was doing some sound exploration and saved the patch. Next time, when I load the patch and press "run", and then go to various cells, it keeps saying "file does not exist". Same behaviour when loading automatically with source audio, and when loading without source and then replacing it. The source in "A0" plays fine, but the problem is with process cells further in table.

Perhaps I did something wrong? Please advice.

Also, for some reason, while in A0 it says "snd1.wav", in A1-A4 cells it changes to "* snd1.wav".

And report window says the following:

""~A_4.bat" Ґ пў«пҐвбп ўгваҐҐ© Ё«Ё ўҐиҐ©
Є®¬ ¤®©, ЁбЇ®«塞®© Їа®Ја ¬¬®© Ё«Ё Ї ЄҐвл¬ д ©«®¬."

Which seems not good  :-[

When trying to launch Soundloom, I get following error:

Fatal Error in Wish
System Encoding

I think this is because my OS is cyrillic.
I remember that Trevor Wishart had special executable file replacement that fixed it on his website, but from what I recall it was provided for very old (by now) version of SoundLoom.
Perhaps new one could be compiled and provided with recent release?

Thanks.

PC Installation / Environment variables
July 28, 2024, 11:51:25 AM
For those, who like me, still uses "legacy" version of Windows 10 and was slightly confused by explanations in Installation Notes for CDP.
As it's a bit different from how it is done in up to date versions of Windows 10 (and different from pre-win10 experience as well), steps are following...

In upper field you can see "Path" variable, choose it and click "edit...", then it opens a table of various paths, from there you choose "create..." and input C:\CDPR8\_cdp\_cdprogs (or what you have instead) and then confirm it.

PC Installation / CDP update question
August 08, 2023, 08:47:59 PM
Hello,

I have CDP 7.1 installed which I use together with Soundshaper 5. Both were installed into "C:\cdpr7" directory while following instructions from documentation.
Now I see that Soundshaper 6 was released, and CDP 8 is upcoming in the future.

I'd like to ask what would be a best way to update my installation in a way that everything continues to work as intended. I can wait for full CDP 8 release, but I'm still curious what would be the most correct way to do updates.

Thanks,
V
