Composition / Problems with pvoc anal 1

Hi,
I have tried to do a pv analysis of a mono sound file in wav format (24-bit, 48kHz) like this:
pvoc anal 1 test.wav test.ana
but I keep getting
ERROR: Invalid data
ERROR: Cannot open output file test
I am on OSX 10.9.5 working from terminal.
Any ideas what's wrong?
